The three mountains of the Ruapehu District are Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurohoe
Mt Ruapehu offers an incredible natural mountain terrain. The Whakapapa ski field and stunning scenic surroundings are handy to Country View Cottage and make a very enjoyable drive. There are huge snow filled basins, lifts to accessed back areas, steep chutes, drop-offs and basins filled with powdered snow.
Mount Tongariro is enjoyed from all year round from summer and winter by walkers, trampers, photographers round and by sightseers – particularly those who are keen to experience a raw volcanic landscape. Some people are keen to see the area which was home to the filming of the most sinister of the Lord of the Rings locations, Mordor, which is the strong hold of the dark Lord Sauron.
Mt Tongariro is also the main focus of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (latitude 42) and if you are keen on tramping and walking have a look at Our Things to Do page.
Mt Ngaurohoe has an attractive, near-perfect volcanic cone which attracts many visitors to the summit. Many visitors walk and climb to the summit of Mount Ngauruhoe via a poled route which leads from Mangatepopo Road end (this can also be done part of the Tongariro Crossing).
During the winter it is a great spot to do some exciting and enjoyable skiing or snowboarding.
